Welcome
"To me, the piece is essentially about space - the visible line - and time, the directed sound."
Umland, who has presented work with John Cage and other luminaries from the New York conceptualist art scene of the 1970s, has maintained an ongoing interest in minimalism. For the Pace exhibition, Umland plotted a series of line drawings on graph paper and then worked with sound engineer Nick Croft to translate the drawings into sound.
In earlier pieces, Umland worked with classical musicians who used his drawings as scores, but he believes that by using simple, computer-generated tones that follow the lines as they move up and down the grid, he has reduced his concept to its essence.
